Welcome to TVSK Dojo –

Where Martial Arts Meets Personal Growth

At Treasure Valley School of Karate (TVSK), we believe martial arts is more than kicks and katas — it's a personal journey. That’s why our focus is on individual growth for every student, from young children to adults of all ages. Whether you're starting at five or ninety-five, we tailor our approach to meet your unique needs the moment you walk through our doors.

TVSK was born from a shared dream held by Jim and Vanesa Sensei, a dream to recreate the kind of dojo that shaped their own lives. Jim trained under Hanshi Morris Mack at the Yakima School of Karate, while Vanesa grew up in Sensei Sue Young’s Central Washington School of Karate, an affiliate school just 45 minutes away. Vanesa often traveled to Yakima to train alongside Jim, and together they experienced the “family” atmosphere that defined both schools, a bond that carried them through high school and college, and still defines their dojo today.

Karate was never just a hobby for them. It became a lifelong calling.

Now, Jim and Vanesa dedicate themselves to sharing that legacy. Vanesa brings not only deep martial arts knowledge, but a gift for teaching students of all ages and learning styles. Her understanding of child development and natural empathy make her a favorite among younger students.

Jim, known for his kindness and humility, carries with him the rich history of their martial arts lineage. His passion lies in honoring the teachings of Morris Mack and passing them on to the next generation; helping students build character, discipline, and resilience that extends far beyond the dojo.

Life changes. Students come and go. But our mission remains: to equip every student with tools that last a lifetime. Respect, courage, and honor.

Jim and Vanesa are proud to be a steady, positive influence for every person who walks through the dojo doors.

Meet Our Instructors

Karate is far more than punches and kicks. It builds character, sharpens the mind, and strengthens the body—making it an ideal activity for kids, parents, and adults who want more from fitness than just a workout.

It’s a lifelong path to physical health, emotional growth, and mental clarity. Whether you're enrolling a child or considering it for yourself, karate offers powerful, long-term benefits that go beyond the dojo.

Strength for the Body, Mind & Life

Karate builds flexibility, strength, endurance, and even stronger bones. It sharpens focus, emotional control, confidence, and self-discipline—skills that help students succeed in school, work, relationships, and other sports. Unlike seasonal athletics, karate supports sustained personal growth at any age.

More Than Self-Defense

At its core, karate blends three powerful dimensions:

  • Martial Art – Technique, tradition, and mental discipline.
  • Combat Sport – Tournaments and competitive skill-building.
  • Self-Defense – Practical safety skills for real life.

Students gain far more than kicks and punches—they learn how to stay calm under pressure, act with respect, and develop a clear sense of purpose.

Built for Every Student

Karate welcomes all ages and abilities, and has proven especially effective for kids with learning differences. It builds patience, positive social behavior, and emotional resilience—while also offering lower injury rates and higher retention than most youth sports.

Values That Last

The dojo environment reinforces respect, structure, and ethical behavior. With clear progression through belt ranks, students set goals, overcome challenges, and experience personal victories that echo far beyond class time.

Lifelong Impact

Whether you’re 6 or 60, karate delivers unmatched benefits:

  • Physical fitness & coordination
  • Confidence & emotional strength
  • Focus & academic improvement
  • Community & cultural connection

If you're looking for something that challenges the body, strengthens the mind, and builds lifelong character—karate offers all that and more, one belt at a time.
